The continuing education of translators employed in local government - Gotzon Egia

The present article briefly explains the model followed by the Provincial Council (Diputación Foral) of Gipuzkoa (www.gipuzkoa.net) for the continuing education of its translators. It’s a participative seminar, oriented towards specific needs, with the support of an external instructor who is responsible for preparing the material to be analyzed and for coaxing the translators to participate to the full.

The seminar is structured in three parts: a) information about standards, tools, publications, conferences, etc.; b) analyzing cases related to syntax or morphology, terminology, toponymy, etc.; c) studying translated documents, that is, self-critical analysis of the translation work of the institution itself.

The seminar is designed for twenty or so persons, in monthly sessions of three hours’ duration, and in terms of time participants put in the equivalent of 1.8% of the annual work-day.
