Terminology: Words Matter

In honour of International Translation Day 2008, the International Federation of Translators (FIT) pays tribute to terminology and the work of terminologists. All language professionals acknowledge the crucial role of terminology. How can we translate, interpret, write or localize in the most efficient manner possible without this basic necessity, words, and therefore terminology?

The World Congress on Specialized Translation 2008: Languages and Intercultural Dialogue in a Globalizing World aims to be a forum for discussion on current international policies that advance the work of translators, a key factor in the preservation of linguistic diversity. The congress will take place in Havana, Cuba, December 8-13, 2008.

The Summer School brings together writers and translators for an intensive week of literary translation workshops, round tables, seminars and readings.

A free international email list called STRAP (Stage Translation Research Adaptation and Practice) has just been established to promote collaboration and discussion between academics and practitioners working in the field of stage translation and adaptation.

The Spanish Centre for Literary Translations at Tarazona will award 20 grants for European translators to work there in residence.

Antzerti was published at two different times (1932-1936 and 1982-1985) and is an invaluable historical resource both of Basque theater and of the translation of theatrical works

Fernando Rey has been awarded with this year's Euskadi prize for the best literary translation into Basque, in consideration of Pereirak dioenez, his translation of Italian author Antonio Tabucchi's Sostiene Pereira (Igela publishing house, 2006).

The Fundación Caja Navarra has published a facsimile edition of the Our Lord Jesus Christ New Testament, a translation of the New Testament completed by Joannes Leizarraga in 1571.
