Translation memories
What a translation memory is?
Translation memory is a file that stores previously translated texts in their source and target languages. The texts and their translations are dificed into smaller units (sometimes referred to as "segments") so that they can be used and re-used by translators as an aid to translating texts having a similar content.
There is a lot of CAT (Computer Aided Translation) software, that uses translation memories; some of the most relevant are: Trados, Déjà Vu, Wordfast, Transit or MetaTexis.
What kind of memory are we offering?
The translation memory we are offering here for free is Spanish (es) to Basque (eu), on the field of law and public administration. There are some 87,000 translation units, in TMX fromat (Translation Memory eXchange format, designed to allow easier exchange of translation memory data between CAT tools. Supported by the latest versions of most leading translation memory programs).
To make easier download, the translation memory has been split in zipped files not bigger than 620 Kb. The complete memory is 70.7 Mb.
Once downloaded, every single file can be used either individually or all together. Anyway, the files can be only used by means of a CAT tool.
Source of translations
The translation corpus, which is on the basis of the memory, has been produced by EIZIE using administrative and legal translations made by the Basque Government, the Basque provincial councils, the Government of Navarre, and many other official entities of the Basque Country. All the translations come from public domain, so there is no nay matter concerning copyrights.
